External Affairs Minister Dinesh Gunawardena is due to leave to
Geneva to attend the 43rd session of the UN Human Rights Council. State
Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe and a delegation will leave to Geneva.
Foreign Secretary Ravinatha Ariyasinghe is already in Geneva and has met with the President of the Human Rights Council, Michelle Bachelet.
Dinesh Gunawardena is scheduled to address the Human Rights Council tomorrow 26th and will officially inform of the government's decision to withdraw from the 30-1 and 40-1 resolutions.
Meanwhile, Dinesh Gunawardena has asked for an opportunity to meet the Human Rights Commissioner to discuss the reasons for the country’s withdrawal from the resolution, but no date has been given.
The 43rd Session of the UNHRC began yesterday with the participation of representatives from 47 countries.
